1. Cookies are magical thinking. And a lovely, very personal, expression of thanks.
2. Welcome to the world of wrist splints. (I've had to use a wrist/thumb splint for about 10 years now, although mainly on my left hand, and I'm right-handed, so not so bad.)
3. Despite ongoing aches and pains, your recovery pace sounds excellent. (You write about it as though nothing much happened, but in reality you had significant injuries.) 45 minutes of spin, even if slower than before, is GREAT.
Ilana, sweet and kind. Yet another meaningful story. I love them. Here’s to getting through the last bits of recovery. And being free from all discomfort from the accident.
The first year of Crosby & Kaneda, Adele and I decided to make cookies as the holiday gift for our clients. We had about 5 different cookies we wanted to include in the gift boxes. And we used paper plates and colored cellophane and pretty ribbons to wrap them. We thought it was such a great idea; just like you, special and personal and showed us as more than accountants but as people who appreciated the value that our clients (all nonprofit organizations) put into the world.
It took such a long time, that when we drove around to distribute them, all our clients were closed for the holidays!
The next year we wrote checks.
But every year we did put together a special card, with photos of us, and hand signed every one.
There were only 3 of us in the firm for the first several years: me, Adele Kaneda, and our office manager,. Since we were 3 women, our office holiday party was a spa day, with massages and facials and a special lunch. The joys of a small staff.
I really loved this post, Ilana. And I think you did a really sweet thing. Definitely a kind person, and I'm sure a great patient. So glad you're recovering, but what an ordeal!
I’m glad to hear you’re on the mend. This is a lovely essay….and halfway through it made me sad and I couldn’t figure out why and then it hit me…. when my mom went into the hospital for surgery she began making a list of all the nurses and doctors who needed a gift once she was home ….and then….she never made it home….she died in the ICU…. Anyway, that’s now a long time ago and while I desperately miss my mom, I’m delighted to know you made your cookies and delivered them to those who helped you in the healing process.

4. As always, thanks for your wonderful writing.

OF COURSE that made you sad! I’m sad too for your mom and wish she could have had more time making cookies and spending time with you. ☹️
What a beautiful story & the cookies sound delicious. So glad you are recovering.😊
What an ordeal for you. I’m glad you are on the mend.
